Seat belts in restored cars?
25th December 2008
CV asked:
What are the laws regarding seat belts in classic cars? I mean if you get an old car that originally didn’t have seat belts, restore it, drive it around, do you need to install modern seat belts by law?

In most US states- No. If you keep it original and it is before the manufactures seat belt date. You can get historical plates and if no set belts- your set. If you want to drive it all the time.- Watch out. Some places make you bring up to the latest if possible. I have a 57 belair and it has no seat belts. Never had them. I was told to put at least a lap belt if for my safety but did not. Then my insurance was higher on the car. They said if I titled it as a collector or historical car I could leave them out. Then I was limited on how much I ccan DRIVE IT. The best is ask the BMV and they will give you all your laws and what is really legal.

No I don’t believe you do, but there are seatbelts available that are ‘period’ looking so they wouldn’t look out of place on your car. I’m uncomfortable driving without them these days

You have to read the seat belt laws in your jurisdiction. If you just ask someone at the court house or DMV they will tell you yes everybody does no matter what but the are all mistaken.
You do not have to put seat belts in any car that was built prior to the 1969 model year, that’s when they became mandatory, before that they were optional in most cars.
I got a ticket here in Kentucky for not wearing my seat belt, the State trooper was parked in the center median a mile or so down the road and was using binoculars to look into the vehicles coming at him, OK so ya caught me big deal, but pretty chicken **** enforcement and I went to his watch commander and raised hell about what he was doing, guess what? He has not been there since! The Sargent gave me a little hand book about seat belts and would you believe that Ky law does not apply to 1981 or prior years, guess the guy who wrote the law in 1983 was driving a 1981 model car, Ya think?
I went to the county atty’s office to complain and after 2 or 3 days finally got to speak with him and he agreed that I should not have gotten the ticket and it was dismissed!!
You would think that the 100k I spent for their new computers in the cop cars would have kicked that one back at him but………..

well i understand as long as the car is under 1968 u dont have to worry about the belts , just where what they have, i have a lap belt only in my 62 no shoulder betls , but i do get looks from police untill they find out the year of the car.
