Restoration of a ‘87 El Camino?
18th November 2008
Steven B asked:
My question/s will follow this explanation.
I have a basic white ‘87 El Camino with minor rust spots and holes, Missing some chrome, Or having rust on rest of chrome chrome. It is stock white with a dark red interior. It is a v-6. it is completly road legal except for needing a muffler and a shock spring.
My plans for it are to get the body fixed(the rust and rust holes), A muffler put on, Replace the spring unless the new lift kit takes care of it, The chrome redone, New matte black paint job, The interior cleaned and redone in black, A 3 inch lift kit with larger tires, And some engine tuning.
I have a fair amount of cash to work with. I want to pay someone to do it, Without getting ripped off as I have absolutly no clue how to fix a car. Where should I start and how much will it cost, One end to the other?. Any other tips?

The bad news is throwing a round number at your project isn’t easy to do. I’d start with references from your friends and family. Word of mouth is the best solution. Another option would be to join a Yahoo Group (http://groups.yahoo.com) for auto restoration, maybe in your area, and they can give you a reference.
I’d hit ebay for the parts you’ll need (chrome, etc.).
Also, rim’s and tires are SUPER expensive from the auto parts stores that specialize in that stuff. I’d hit tirerack.com and put in your vehicle information, and see what rims are there. From there, go back to ebay and search for them. You’ll find that on ebay the prices are like half compared to other manufacturers.
The bad news is… once you start pulling parts off the car to do the restore, you might find all sorts of bad news… rusted other parts, or whatever.
Good luck!

do this yourself .. everything you spoke of and wanting it done you can read about it.. if you do it yourself you can save more than half and invest in some premium tires..http://carpainting.wetpaint.com/page/Preperation?t=anon hear is an example of what i am talking about.. the lift kits you speak of can be done by you also good luck

Costs can vary widely, depending on what choices you make. I highly recommend replacing instead of repairing rusted panels. It is not that much to buy aftermarket panels. Get in touch with a few body shops and tell them what you want and they will be able to help you with a plan of attack. From your description and having not seen the vehicle all I can do is throw a guesstimate at you. At my shop, including the interior and suspension items you would be looking at at least $7,000.00 Check out Original parts group, they have a website originalpartsgroup.com they have anything you could possibly want for El Caminos.
