car restoration
dee9051 asked:

I own a 1970 bmw, and if I need replacement parts to do a slight restoration; would bmw reproduce them if they don’t normally make those parts anymore? Also in general, would a car company reproduce discontinued parts for a car that’s 30-40 years old? And if they don’t where could someone find replacement parts. Including BODY Parts, like fenders, bumpers, etc……

  1. JC Whitney has parts or check out the Hemmings Motor News. Its Chocked full of vendors of hard to get parts. Restored a 1967 Pontiac GTO and it helped ALOT!

  5. Auto salvage yards(auto dismantlers)are good places to go to locate body parts when you can’t find it anywhere else.
BMW will not make a 30 year old part, just like GM or Ford will not do so either. You have to hope you can find a “jobber” who makes those parts.
    Try for a possible.

  6. First thing I will tell you is sometimes the original dealers believe it or not have the NOS, (New Old Stock) part still in the original package while not common when a car is in the 30-40 year age range it is still happening depending on the popularity of that model…

Second thing is grab a copy of Hemmings Motor news… or maybe a years subscription to it depending on how many parts you need for your pride n joy…

Join a BMW club they will also help you find parts often our Mopar club members will keep their eyes peeled when they go on personal foray, part searches for their own car and fall accrossed the exact part George or Jack has been loking everywhere for and at a bargain too…

it pays to know friends who are restoring the same Brand of car… especailly sometimes if they drive a different model… that way you don’t end up seeking the same kind of hard to find part too…

    Good Luck on that restoration

  7. I would start calling the junkyards and seeing what they have. Look in the Yellow Pages under Auto Salvage.

  8. i dont believe they will reproduce them because once they stop, they stop trust me, almost all the parts on my car arent made anymore so i would suggest doing what i do, go to a scrap yard and find that same model and year and get parts off that or find someone with a messed up 70 bmw but that can still be used for parts.

  10. has parts for 1970 BMW like brakes, clutch, etc.

You might need to find an old BMW junkyard to find body parts. Reproduction body parts are available for popular old muscle cars like Mustangs, Chevelles, etc. but probably not for a ‘70 BMW.
