car restoration
Aaron B asked:

I want to start by thanking everyone thats helped me along the way with the restoration of my fathers first car a 1971 Ford Ranchero. After he recently passed away nobody wanted to keep it but I couldn’t let it go.
It’s now running great for the most part, except. About a week ago a cable came loose under the car that was connected to the power steering, the fluid all leaked out and the steering tightened up so I drove it home, which was far away. I re-connected the line and re filled it with power steering fluid, the steering loosened right up again, except now when I turn the wheel it make a really loud whining sound. Did I blow the pump or something by driving it home with a dry pump? I figured if the pump was blown the steering wouldn’t have loosened up. Does anyone know what this may be, whats causing that terrible sound? Thank you all so much, I really couldn’t have done half the mechanical repairs I’ve done so far without your help and guidance.

Ira

  1. Noise from Ford PS pumps is a common problem. The pump and both hoses should be replaced to get yourself back up and running. Rebuilt pumps are common at most parts stores. The only special tool needed is the pulley puller and installer if you get a pump without the pulley. Harbor freight tools has a good home owners grade tool for this. Fill with fresh fluid and a new belt and you will be back in business. No need to bleed the system as it is an “open” system, just watch the fluid level as the hoses and system fills up.

  2. Dont worry, you have air in the system. Pull off the power steering cap while it is running and turn the wheel almost to full stop in both directions. Then go back and check the fluid, it should look like foam on top. keep doing this until you see no more foam. I had to fight this same thing when I installed power steering on my 79 Dodge Power wagon. It made one god awful sound but it cleared up once I worked the air out.
