Keeping The Traffic Flow

29th July 2009

Is your conveyance stranded on a road? Was it an accident? Or was it that it simply broke down? If it is a major highway that your conveyance is stuck in, then may be the highway authorities can tow it away as they are likely to have their own tow trucks. If not, there are the private towing service providers who could tow it away. You could call them up over your mobile phone or you could communicate to them your problem as a text message. Often government departments who themselves have a large fleet of conveyances use their own tow trucks to haul in their stranded conveyances. Private businesses whose business activities require them to own and manage a fleet of conveyances often use their own tow trucks to tow away their stranded conveyances. This could be the case with cargo movers or transport operators.

There are different ways that the tow trucks can lift and tow the conveyances away from the site. The most suited approach will have to be decided based on the situation the conveyance is in. You need to lift or drag the conveyance if it has slid down a steep embankment. This requires the tow truck to have suitable equipments for the task. There are a variety of equipments that the tow truck will be equipped with. The conveyances can be easily pulled up with a boom winch. This is useful when the conveyance is stuck in a place unable to drive away or move. Hooks and chains, or for that matter slings, can be used if the conveyance have to be bodily lifted. A wheel lift is useful if you need to lift the drive wheels. But all these are useful if the conveyance is fit for towing. But then what will you do if the conveyance is not in a condition for towing? The conveyance will of course have to be hauled away after lifting the conveyance bodily from the ground.

The flatbed tow truck is required when the conveyance has to be lifted and taken away. The flatbed tow truck has a flatbed fitted to it. The flatbed can be inclined and lowered to the ground level. This is operated hydraulically. The winch, which is also fitted to the tow truck, then draws or pulls up the conveyance on to the flatbed. The specific task of carting away a conveyance is achieved only by the  flatbed tow truck. These tow trucks sometimes also have the provision of wheel-lift. Flatbed tow truck is also called Rollback Tow Truck.

Tow trucks provide a useful service to traffic management. In many countries, the tow trucks are identified with the number plates ending in ‘TT”.
