car restoration
…shea… asked:

I just bought a car to save gas because my truck was getting me 10mpg on the highway so I bought a 1995 honda and this little civic is getting me anywhere between 42-48. Anyway- I didnt want to spend too much on it because it would defeat the purpose of saving money. Only bad part is the paint is old and has little white sunspots from fading. Ive tried waxing the old fashioned way. I want to do my part to help the climate and save money- but I don’t like driving a car I’m not proud of. It just needs a little help! Any links or helpful advice would be fantastic— thank you so much!

  1. All cars from the factory now use a base coat/clear coat paint system. As it ages, sometimes the clear coat foggs or turns opaque (white), and later starts to peel. The only solution is repaint or put up with the poor looks.

  2. Can you get the paintwork colour matched? I would suggest just checking under the bonnet for the colour code, but since it sounds like an older car, and there are already faded bits, the original colour would probably not match the colour your car has become…so yeah, i’d go to a auto paint shop/dealer/workshop and ask them to do colour match for you, then, as long as there are no imperfections in the body (i.e. rust, scratches, whatever (which should be repaired first), you can just give those areas a new lick of paint…make sure the car is totally clean where you’re gonna paint though…and give the area to be sanded a very very light sanding (you’re not trying to take off the paint) before you apply paint, this will ensure a nice finish.

So yeah I’d check out getting your car’s duco colour-matched. It’s not as expensive as many people think…my local place will colour match and make me up a spray pack for only $37…which I reckon’s pretty good…

    GOOD LUCK!

  3. the paint is probably base coat clear coat and there’s probably not much you can do unless you get it re-sprayed, when the clear starts to get bad or fade away on those it dulls the finish real bad, that’s about all that can be done for it,with it not having much clear coat on it you don’t have a lot to work with on it,you might get some of the local vocation schools to re-spray it as learner car when school starts back ,they don’t charge no labor, they do this as practice, other than paying for a good paint job there’s not too many options on it,good luck.
