car restoration
Jeph asked:

I think it would be really cool/fun to do some work on an old VW bus.

A few questons…

1.On estimate, how much would it cost me to pick one up that needs some repairs? Not anything major like completely replacing its guts… but i wouldn’t want it in very good condition either, because then it would be really expensive just to buy. Preferably one of those cool late ’60s or early ’70s ones.

2. How much would the repairs cost me? (obviously depends on the condition, but just an estimate)

3. How hard would it be? I’m not necessarily a “car guy” (this would be my first restoration), so if this particular model is particularly hard to work with then I’ll drop this idea. But I want to start learning more about fixing cars and this can be be the beginning. Kind of a learning process. My brother knows a ton about cars so I’m sure he can help with anything I don’t know how to do.

Any question you can answer would be greatly appreciated. Or any other advice. Thanks!

Wesley

  1. It all depends on the condition of the one you find. No one can guess that.

  2. I love the old buses. The ones with 16 windows rocked. It depends what part of the country you live in and what i needs. Even the old oval window bugs go for 5 grand out of a junk yard if you can even find one. You can get a bus on craigslist and judge from there how much you want to invest.
