restore car
Michael asked:

I have an old and rare Toyota Cressida. It’s been in the family since day one but has started developing some major rust areas around the wheel wells. I want to fix these rust spots to try and restore the look of the car but I know nothing about rust or body work. Is this a hard job? Any simple fixes or ideas?

  1. grind off the rust and bubbled paint
if there is metal missing, use bondo
then repaint it with primer and paint in those areas.
this will keep it from rusting further

  2. its hard to do a rust repair that will hold. there are a few strategies. you can grind all the old rust out and i do mean all, and then bondo and sand it until it looks perfect….a good body man can do it so you cant even tell. In order for the repair to “hold” without blistering it then needs to be sealed and primed from the outside and completely sealed from the backside so moisture cant get to it…this works. Another strategy is to replace the whole fender, or , in the back cut out a large portion and the use a new replacement portion OR cut out the exact same piece from another car with a good panel and weld it in…then fix the seams with either bondo or some professionals use lead to fill the seams and thats very nice. Im not going to lie….doing a professional repair on a body is very hard and dusty work…then you have to paint it…another project in tiself.

  4. You will be short term unless you cut all of the rust out plus 1/2 inch. Have new metal welded in and then use body filler to fill in the low spots and get it smooth. You will need to coat the backside with something to keep it from rusting again. I would suggest something like the spray in bedliner for trucks. Do not use the spray can stuff as it is no good.

  5. Have you heard of KBS Coatings? They make some products that seal rust permanently so you never have to deal with it again. The first product is AquaKlean, which get the metal cleaned. The second product is RustBlast, which etches the metal. The last step is RustSeal, which will coat the rust and it will never come back. You can buy the KBS System Sampler Kit and that should be all that you need.
