I’m considering restoring a Studebaker Commander Starliner and was wondering what engine I could put in it. I know very little about car restoration, I’m just researching costs. I’m not shooting for authenticity, I just want a good engine that will fit and pass CA smog standard tests.

I would like any advice on doing a full restoration on a 1973 Volkswagen type 3 squareback?
16th June 2008
I have my mothers 73′ squareback that she drove off the showroom floor new from Lennock Motor in Camperdown, Sydney.
I just want some advice on what are the likely costs, pitfalls and potential value of the vehicle once it is completed.
Its a pride of the family piece so we want to do right by the car in having it restored.
Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks!!!

Restoration Or used car?
13th June 2008
I was talking to my dad today and we started talking about restoring cars. Has anyone ever restored a car? If so, is it worth the money and hard work put into it or just rather off buying a used car?

Classic car restoration question for the body work pros?
12th June 2008
When restoring an old 60’s model chevy, how much would a good body shop charge to fix rusted areas around the windshield and back glass? Is it a lot of work? When choosing a car to restore, are there areas that might be rusted that make a car not worth messing with? I can do everything myself except body work, that just isn’t my knack.

Does anyone have any ideas how to find a specific car?
11th June 2008
I would like to find my Grandpas old car so I can restore it. Both of my grandparents have passed away and we don’t have the VIN Number….we don’t know if he sold it or just parked it like so many did back then (Late 50’s to early 60’s) I have contacted the motor vehicle department, but they need a VIN number. I have put a request in with the local paper (it is a small town), but have had no response. I plan to take a road trip to the area and do some looking, but beyond that, I am out of ideas. Does anybody have any investigative talents that they would like to share?

1969 GTO Resto Help?
8th June 2008
First off, Id like to thank everyone who has replied to my previous questions. Ive asked a few regarding a restoration project Im trying to complete on a 1969 GTO. All of your replies have been very helpful.
So, I’m going to pick the car up tomorrow with the new suspension (Springs, gas shocks, front and rear anti-sway bars) and Magnaflow exhaust system installed. From there its headed straight to the body shop to get some paint touched up, new door handles and mirrors installed, and other cosmetic improvements.
The next step that I would like to take is to direct my attention to the engine. The car actually runs great right now, but my overall goal with the engine is to eventually build it out from a 400 to a 455. From my research, this would involve adding the following parts:
New crank
Rods forged
Custom forged dished pistons
Cam and lifters
MSD distributor
From my estimates this is going to cost around $2500 without labor. I wanted to find out if this should all be done at once or if there is a way that I can buy and install pieces of them along the way as money allows. Also, any other additional performance suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I want this thing to look and perform as well as possible without going overboard (NOS, Supercharger, etc.).

Does anyone have any instruction for putting in an alternator in a 1988 Chrysler New Yorker? And any other repairs you might know about. I am in the process of restoring this car myself.
